Francis
(Buddy) Leonard
|
Francis Xavier “Buddy” Leonard, DOB 1940. Like the Bulgers, Buddy was
from Logan Way. But he was not nearly as successful as Whitey, and was
pinched time and again. His luck finally ran out in November 1975.
Whitey decided to eliminate Tommy King, who had helped him murder Paulie
McGonagle. That alone was grounds for death, but when King got the best
of Whitey in a bar fight, he had to go immediately. He was shot to
death by Johnny Martorano and then buried on state land on the banks of
the Neponset River. Whitey then took King’s car and grabbed King’s good
friend Leonard as he left his favorite barroom, tipsy. Whitey shot his
old neighbor in head , and left his body in King’s car in an effort to
add even more confusion to the disappearance of Tommy King. |

King’s car, with Buddy Leonard’s body inside, was abandoned in the
housing project where both Whitey and Buddy had grown up. Police were
“baffled” and wondered, as they were supposed to, if Leonard had
anything to do with the disappearance of his buddy. King’s body was
recovered in a marsh on the Quincy line in the fall of 2000. When
driving past the site, Whitey would always say to whoever was in the
car, “Tip your hat to Tommy.”
