Howie Carr
Whitey Watch’s proprietor wrote the first post-Corsetti stories about
Whitey and Billy, specifically quoting Mayor Kevin White as saying he
feared for his life during busing “because Whitey was crazy enough even
then” to kill him. White also said of Billy, on videotape: “If my
brother threatened to kill you, you’d be nothing but nice to me.”
In the late 80s, one of Carr’s co-workers stopped by the South Boston
Liquor Mart, and the wiseguy behind the counter inquired as to why Howie
never stopped in, even though he drove by the store three or four days a
week.
“You tell Hoiwe,” the plug-ugly said, “if he comes in, we got a fresh
Dumpster out back waitin’ for him. It’ll be another Robin Benedict.”
Mr. Carr never visited the package store in question.
In 1990, a federal wiretap recorded two hoodlums discussing Whitey’s
anger at being listed in Boston Magazine as having a net worth of $50
million. Whitey blamed Howie, a magazine columnist at the time, for the
mention, and the hoodlum on the wire said Bulger was “henbleep” that the
reporter was “setting him for a snatch” by the Italians.
“Boy,” said one hood to the other, in testimony that was reported in
1991, “does Whitey hate Howie.”
In the late 1990’s, Kevin Weeks bragged to a Herald photographer that
“they” had always known where Carr lived –- across the street from a
graveyard. In fact, that was where Carr lived.
For many years, Mr. Carr drove home a different way every evening.
