Meet
Hugh "Sonny" Shields, DOB 2-21-37, center, as photographed in 1969.
Stylishly attired in handcuffs, a polyester shirt, a short-brim hat and
the ever-fashionable Hush Puppies, he had just been charged with
murdering the last of the Bennett brothers, Billy, in 1967. Sonny beat
the rap, and was later machine-gunned by Whitey Bulger in a car on
Commercial Street in 1973. The hard-luck Sonny survived, and fled
Boston, but in 1975 he returned and, he claimed, was offered a contract
by a “tall” FBI agent (apparently Bob Sheehan) to murder the Angiulos at
98 Prince Street, the Doghouse. Sheehan’s partner, Dennis Condon, was
asked about the alleged overture by Sheehan in 1998. Dennis Condon was
the ex-partner of H. Paul Rico, who at the time of his death was under
indictment for murder, along with Whitey, in Oklahoma. |
