Jackie
McDermott
|
Jackie McDermott, a former Golden Gloves boxer in Lowell, was the top
bookie in the Merrimack Valley. His original layoff man was Indian Joe
Notarangeli, and after his murder he joined Winter Hill. He was ticketed
for an income-tax evasion rap in the mid-70’s, but dodged it by
recovering a safe that had been stolen in Carlisle that contained
military secrets. (The burglars had been unable to crack it, and had
dumped it into the Concord River, where Navy divers recovered it. In
1987, Billy Barnoski, the one-time muscle for Fat Tony Ciulla, was
released from prison. Whitey told Jackie to take him into his
organization. In May 1988, coked up, Barnoski murdered Jackie, just as
McDermott had feared he would. Barnoski was convicted and is now serving
life in prison. |
