Meet
James Matera, DOB 9/14/43, South Boston plug-ugly and partner of a
Whitey Bulger bookmaker named Louie Litif. In August 1979, at the bar
where Litif' hung out, Hap's Lounge, Litif ordered Matera into the
basement. Matera turned to bartender Bobby Conrad and said: "Bobby, if
I'm not back in 15 minutes, come down and check on me, 'cause I'll
probably be dead."
He was. Shortly thereafter, bartender Conrad vanished -- presumably
murdered and buried, on Litif's property in Canada. Litif's handball
partner, corrupt FBI agent Zip Connolly, told Conrad's survivors to
dummy up.
Meanwhile, in April 1980, Litif was driven to Whitey's bar in the Lower
End, Triple O's, by Brian Halloran , who had just been released from
prison. Whitey murdered Litif and then left his body in his car outside
Mafia capo Larry Baione's laundry in the South End. Two years later,
Whitey machine-gunned the only witness -- Halloran, along with a guy who
just happened to be giving him a ride home from the barroom on Northern
Avenue.
Five more murders -- just another day at the office for Whitey Bulger. |
