Joe (The Horse) Salvati

Joe “the Horse” Salvati, framed for murder by the FBI

DOB 10-30-32, finally had sentence commuted in 1997. Mainly worked as a doorman at Mafia-owned clubs, but had somehow crossed Joe Barboza, who had to explain away the fact that witnesses had seen a bald man (Jimmy the Bear) in the front seat of the hit car. Barboza said Salvati was wearing “a bald wig.”

Joe the Horse at his commutation hearing with a full head of hair. He is now suing the feds for millions of dollars, on the incontestable grounds that they knew he was an innocent man and still allowed him to serve 30-plus years in prison.

The case is pending, and has been for years now. Do you suppose the G-men are hoping Joe the Horse dies before he gets his day in court?

His interview on 60 Minutes was one of the precipitating factors in the decision by the U.S. House Committee on Government Reform to hold hearings in 2002-03 on the ties between the Boston FBI office and organized crime.

This is Dan Rea (on left), the Channel 4 TV reporter (and lawyer) who fought for years to prove Salvati’s innocence
