DOB
1917, Joe Mac was a World War II vet, who had the misfortune to be on
three ships that were torpedoed. An original member of the Winter Hill
Gang, his downfall began when he robbed a stamp dealer of a collection
worth $50,000. On April 1, 1976 his name was added to the FBI’s Most
Wanted List. As a fugitive, he was used by Whitey Bulger. When Whitey
heard that Richie Castucci, a Revere bar owner/bookie, was informing on
him, he killed the snitch – after beating him for thousands of dollars
on football games. Later Whitey used Joe Mac as the wheelman on two of
Johnny Martorano’s hits, in Florida and in Oklahoma. By 1982, he was
tired of being on the lam, and called Whitey to tell him he was
returning to Boston by train. Soon the FBI knew, and the New York feds
grabbed Joe Mac right off the train on Sept. 15, 1982. After serving his
time, he died a free man in 1997. |
