Depending on
who you believe, John O’Neil was either a construction worker or a
small-time gun dealer for the McLaughlins. Whatever, one Sunday
afternoon in 1965 he was alone in the Mickey Mouse Lounge with Raymond
DiStasio, another McLaughlin sympathizer, when in walks Joe Barboza.
According to Barboza in his book, he was only interested in whacking
DiStasio, and had no plans to hit O’Neil until he began whimpering,
after which he got two in the hat. The city was outraged – for about two
days.
