Cullen was another former Herald police reporter who ended up at the
Globe. He moved to South Boston and was living there while working on
the 1988 Spotlight Team series about the two brothers, Whitey the serial
killer and Billy the Senate president. One day, shortly before the
series was to appear, Cullen received a call from an FBI agent telling
him that Fat Tony Ciulla, the Winter Hill race-fixer, wanted Cullen to
know that Whitey might kill him after the series came out.
Using Ciulla’s name was a neat ploy because Fat Tony was in the Witness
Protection Program, and thus unavailable to confirm or deny. Cullen and
his family were moved out of Southie, but as the days went by, and no
one from the FBI ever called with any follow-up, Cullen began to suspect
that the boys were up to their tricks.
The series ran. Cullen was not murdered.
