Mayor of
Boston from 1968 until 1984. Former secretary of state, 1961-68. Born in
1929, the son of politicians on both sides of his family. This interview
was conducted in late 1979 by Christopher Lydon, then of WGBH Channel 2,
just after White had won his fourth and final term as mayor of Boston.
White began by talking about Whitey’s brother, State Senate President
Billy Bulger, then moved onto the subject of Whitey. If some of the
conversation seems disjointed, that’s just because that was the way
“Mayor DeLuxe” talked. As he mentions Whitey killing him, watch Kevin
use his hands to make an imaginary machine-gun, which he “fires” at
Lydon. The video is courtesy of WGBH.
White went to work for BU after his departure, under some federal
duress, in 1984, and now suffers from early Alzheimers. Two of his
children have sought political office, but the disasters of White’s
final years in office remain in the public memory, and neither child has
come close to winning, either for the City Council or the state Senate. |
