This is Nick
Gianturco, MC at accused murderer Zip Connolly's
retirement dinner from the FBI. This videotape came from Whitey Bulger's
personal archives. In the 1980's, Gianturco introduced Whitey and Stevie
to "Donnie Brasco," the undercover FBI agent played by Johnny Depp in
the movie. After Zip was promoted at Boston Edison, Gianturco succeeded
him as director of security. Charlie Gianturco, Nick's brother was in
charge of the FBI's early efforts to find Whitey. |

Zip quit to
succeed ex-FBI agent Jack Kehoe as director of security at Boston
Edison, and a few years later Gianturco would succeed Zip, when he was
promoted to vice president. On the witness stand, Nick later admitted
that he’d made a mistake in judgment exchanging small gifts with Whitey.
When Whitey went on the lam in December 1994, Nick’s brother Charlie was
put in charge of, the investigation. It went nowhere. The interesting
point about this video is that with the room full of federal, state and
local law enforcement, not to mention prosecutors and politicians,
Gianturco could joke so warmly about a guy everyone knew, even then, was
in the pocket of Whitey Bulger. Connolly, serving a 10-year federal
sentence for racketeering,
will
stand trial soon on murder charges in Miami.
He is accused of fingering John Callahan,, a Boston businessman Zip’s
boss Whitey feared would testify against him. John Martorano murdered
Callahan in 1982 – eight years before this cop love-fest for Zip.
