Paul
Mahoney was the longtime top aide to Whitey’s brother, then-Senate
president Billy Bulger. He was an former YAC hack – the Youth Activities
Commission, a holding pen for city coatholders in the days of Mayor
Kevin White. Appointed to the district court bench by (who else?) Gov.
Mike Dukakis during his final days in office, when Billy was telling him
what to do. At his confirmation hearings in front of the Governor’s
Council, Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz and Harvey Silverglate,
the attorney for Harold Brown in the 75 State Street scandal, showed up
to testify against Mahoney. Bulger appeared, accompanied by his aide
Eddie Phillips, who four years later would host Billy at his home when
Whitey called from his hideout after going on the lam. Billy called
Dershowitz and Silverglate “connivers” and “murderers of reputation” as
he pointed at them. The Governor’s Council approved Mahoney on an 8-0
vote. He now sits in the Malden District Court. His son, Paul Mahoney,
Jr. was hired onto the UMass payroll when Billy was the president of the
University. |
