Gerry Subby, another
victim of Whitey?
Gerry Subby was the boyfriend of
Peggy Sue Westcoat, a 23-year-old cashier at the Miami fronton of
World Jai-Alai, which Whitey Bulger and Stevie Flemmi were skimming at
the rate of $10,000 a week. In December 1980, Whitey was trying to
decide how much Roger Wheeler, the owner of World Jai-Alai, knew about
the skim. He needed to talk to someone who talked to Wheeler....
On the evening of Dec. 5, 1980, two
men broke into Westcoat's apartment. First they killed Subby, her
27-year-old boyfriend, a Conrail conductor from Cleveland, and then
they tortured her before strangling her with a piece of macrame.

The murders were first mentioned
publicly in connection with Whitey in "The Brothers Bulger." Now the
cold-case squad of the Miami-Dade Police have reopened the case.
They are taking DNA samples from the crime scene and will try to match
them with Whitey's.
A few months later, Roger Wheeler
was murdered in Tulsa. Then, in May 1982, Whitey shot the gangster
he'd initially asked to do the hit, Brian Halloran, as well as a
friend of Halloran who happened to be driving him. In July 1982 in
Florida the former president of World Jai-Alai, John Callahan, was
murdered, his body left in a Cadillac at Miami International Airport.
Murdered by or at the behest of
Whitey in the World Jai-Alai caper: at least four, maybe as many as
six, depending on who murdered Gerry Subby and Peggy Sue Westcoat.
Anyone with any infomation on
these two heinous murders should call 305-471-2400.
