Joseph F.
Timilty
aka:
"Diamond Joe"
|
Corrupt Boston police commissioner 1936-1943. Appointed by
Governor James Curley, son of crooked contractor "Diamond Joe
Timilty". Took payoffs from hub gambling czar Harry "Doc
Jasper" Sagansky. In the midst of a state crackdown in 1943,
he withdrew $37,370 in cash from a personal bank account and safe
deposit box. Indicted twice but each time charges were
dismissed. Ran for mayor against his former mentor, Curley,
was crushed. |

|
A confirmed bachelor, Joe loved flashy clothes and uniforms
with epaulets, the gaudier the better. Nonetheless, he was a
close friend of the notorious heterosexual Joseph P. Kennedy. |

In this undated photograph James Michael Curley is on the far right,
next to Joe Timilty, on whose right is Cardinal Richard
Cushing. In front of Cushing is Joe's namesake nephew, Joe
Timilty. Like his uncle, Joe would unsuccessfully run for
mayor (three times). Also like his uncle, he would be
indicted, in his case for bank fraud. Always a loyal vote in
the state senate for Billy Bulger, "Jailbird Joe" became inmate
19400-038 and was released in April 1994. Now a lobbyist for a
race track, his son continues the family tradition as a state
senator and his daughter is on the Governor's Council. |
